Image this scene with me. You’re sitting in a romantic restaurant with the one you love as you discuss your relationship. You each say how much you love each other, but then he/she makes this statement. “You know I really think you’re great and I love spending time with you, but I want to be able to see other people.” Would you be okay with that kind of relationship?
Some people have this type of relationship with Jesus. They love him, but don’t want the relationship to be exclusive. When their relationship with Jesus begins to hurt their other relationships, fans will leave. You see, Jesus isn’t their one and only, He’s just one of many.
We may think that we are being faithful in our relationship with Jesus, but these four questions will help us determine where our allegiance really lies.
For what do you sacrifice your money?
Is it easy to give your money to the stores but hard to give it to the church? Many times we spend our money in an attempt to buy happiness, but there is no satisfaction apart from Jesus.
When you hurt, where do you go for comfort?
Do you run to food, family, work, or your spouse? It’s okay to seek comfort from our spouse and family, that’s what God intended. But we shouldn’t run to people or things before we run to Jesus.
What disappoints or frustrates you the most?
The feeling of being overwhelmed or disappointed may reveal an area where you have placed too much importance. If this disappointment ruins your day, it has too much hold on your life.
Was is it that really gets you excited?
Is it money, success, spouse, looks, new clothes? Do you find yourself talking more about the winning team or Jesus? God won’t share your affection.
Never worship them or serve them,
because I, the LORD your God,
am a God who does not tolerate rivals.
Deuteronomy 5:9
Is Jesus your One and Only or just one of many?
